Two-week course "Operation Issues of the Turbine Island for NPP with VVER", organised by Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University and Rosatom Technical Academy with the support of Rosenergoatom Concern JSC, was completed on 22 December.

33 participants from 15 countries: Bangladesh, Cambodia, Egypt, Ghana, Indonesia, Iran, Nigeria, Senegal, Sudan, Turkey, Uganda, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Uzbekistan, Zambia, and Zambia studied in-person and online the issues of operating the turbine island of NPPs with VVER-type nuclear reactors during a two-week course for international trainees. Train-the-Trainers courses are organised by ROSATOM Technical Academy on a regular basis for the transfer of nuclear education to partner countries.
The Higher School of Nuclear and Heat Power Engineering has significant experience in training personnel in the field of design and operation of NPPs with VVER-type nuclear reactors, including for international projects. Maxim Konyushin, the course coordinator and senior lecturer at the Higher School of Nuclear and Heat Power Engineering, explained that this unique course was designed for representatives of countries new to nuclear power engineering and showed how to organise the operation of nuclear power plants. Mixed format expanded the possibilities for the organisers: access to the course was available to a larger number of participants, which provided feedback on how to make programme adjustments and improvements. Active interaction ensured the success of the course.

Participants studied in detail the peculiarities of operation of heat and mechanical equipment of the turbine island of NPPs with VVER-1200 turbine island and learnt about the experience of operation of steam turbine equipment of Leningrad NPP-2 during lectures and practical sessions of Institute of Energy faculty and specialists of JSC Atomenergoproekt and Risk Monitor LLC.
Yaroslav Vladimirov, Associate Professor of HSNHPE, noted that an important component of the programme was the technical tour to "Turbine Technologies of AAEM". Chief designer of the enterprise introduced a 1200 MW low-speed turbine "Arabel", which is supplied for VVER-1200 reactors to such international projects as El Dabaa NPP in Egypt , Akkuyu NPP in Turkey and Paks NPP in Hungary.
Participants of the full-time course had a chance to explore SPbPU campus and the history of the university during the guided tour at the Politech History Museum and visited the I.I. Kirillov Turbine Laboratory.
At the course graduation ceremony, Mohamed Fekri, one of the full-time participants, expressed his gratitude to the organisers, noting that studying at SPbPU had provided more than unique knowledge, bringing together experts in the nuclear power industry from different countries.
