SPbPU at the IAEA Platform: Young Lecturers Present Research on NPP Safety

Young specialists and lecturers from the Higher School of Nuclear and Heat Power Engineering of the Institute of Energy at SPbPU took part in the International Conference on Topical Issues in Nuclear Installation Safety (TIC-2026) «Learning from the Past to Accelerate the Future,» organized by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). The conference was held from June 29 to July 3, 2026, in Vienna, Austria, and brought together leading experts in the design, operation, and safety assurance of nuclear power facilities.

At the international platform, representatives of SPbPU spoke as part of the delegation of the Russian Federation as employees of JSC "Atomenergoproekt," presenting the results of research on topical issues of improving the efficiency and safety of nuclear power.

Alexander Moloskin, Senior Lecturer at the Higher School of Nuclear and Heat Power Engineering , presented a report titled "Calculation of the Daily Load-Following Cycle of an NPP Using the Virtual Power Unit of an NPP." The paper examined the capabilities provided by the "Virtual NPP" program and the Virtual Power Unit built on its basis, and also demonstrated the results of simulating a 100%–50%–100% power maneuver at a power unit in the daily load-following mode.

Mikhail Ivkov, Teaching Assistant at the Higher School of Nuclear and Heat Power Engineering , delivered a presentation titled "Justification of the Periodic Testing Methodology to Confirm the Long-Term Operability of the Passive Heat Removal System from the Containment." The research focused on issues of confirming the reliability of passive safety systems at nuclear power plants, which play a key role in ensuring the safe operation of modern power units.

The participation of young lecturers from SPbPU in the IAEA conference demonstrates the high level of academic and applied science at the university and in the industry, and also shows the close cooperation between the university and enterprises in the nuclear energy sector. The presented reports attracted professional interest from conference participants and contributed to the international exchange of experience on the development of safe and efficient nuclear energy technologies.

The IAEA conference was devoted to analyzing the accumulated experience in the field of nuclear installation safety and seeking solutions that facilitate the accelerated introduction of advanced technologies while maintaining the highest safety standards. The event was attended by representatives of regulatory bodies, design organizations, operating companies, research centers, and international organizations from around the world.
