A total of 95 Turkish students have studied at the Institute of Energy Engineering of St. Petersburg Peter the Great Polytechnic University on master's and specialist programs. Almost all of them work or will work in the future at the country's first nuclear power plant Akkuyu, which is currently under construction. This is the largest project in the history of Russian-Turkish cooperation. The NPP is to supply 10% of the electricity needs of the Turkish Republic.

The first enrollment of future power engineers from Turkey in the five-year specialty program "Nuclear Power Plants: Design, Operation and Engineering" took place in 2015. Students underwent a multilevel selection process with testing and interviews to enter the program - the competition was 10 people for one place. 24 Turkish students successfully completed their studies in Russian and graduated from Polytechnic in winter 2022 with the qualification of engineer-physicist, three of them received honorary diplomas. The full group started work at the Akkuyu nuclear power plant. Another 24 students from the Republic of Turkey are getting ready to defend their thesis projects in a next month.

" Turkish students have completed a full course of study on NPPs with water-water reactors of enhanced safety level 3+, having obtained the qualification of engineer-physicist. They studied various methods of equipment calculations and learned the NPP design and safe operation regulations. Our Turkish graduates are already successfully applying the knowledge gained during their studies in the workplace. Many of them are already working at Akkuyu NPP. Taking into account that the working language at Akkuyu NPP is Russian, which our students have mastered during their studies, it also allows them to quickly get involved in practical activities," said Yuri Petrenya, Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Director of the Institute of Energy of SPbPU, Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

Russian is the working language at the nuclear power plant in Mersin, so specialists studied the ""Russian language basic course"" at the Graduate School of International Educational Programs of SPbPU. Starting from 2020, the Institute of Energy of Peter the Great Polytechnic University has been providing training in English at international master's programs for future Akkuyu employes. Over the past years, 47 students graduated with master's degrees in Power Engineering and Thermal Power Plants. While studying, they also took a " Career-oriented course of Russian".

"St. Petersburg Polytechnic University has the necessary expertise to train personnel for international NPPs. We are constantly adjusting our educational programs to ensure that graduates understand the level of modern nuclear power development and receive relevant, in-demand technical education. Polytech is a Rosatom core university, so students of the Institute of Energy have internships at Rosatom's nuclear power plants and in the university's laboratories, and also visit energy companies, including Izhorskiy Zavod and Attommash, which produce equipment for Akkuyu nuclear power plant," said Andrei Rudskoy, Rector of SPbPU, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

During the years of study at Polytechnic, Turkish students acquire not only a profession, but also participate in the cultural and social life of the university. Turkish students created a rock band and became finalists of the " Polyrock" contest. Also, eight Turkish female students won scholarships of the IAEA Marie Sklodowska-Curie Program and completed internships in Vienna. In 2019, Polytech virtually "visited Turkey" - students organized a festival of Turkish culture. In 2022, students created a Turkish club in PolyUnion, the international student club of Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University.
