From SPbPU Master's program to a teaching position in Iraq: How alumnus Hashim Alzwaini is building a career in the energy sector

Hashim Alzwaini is a graduate of the Master's and PhD programs at the Institute of Energy of Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University (SPbPU) and a lecturer at Basra Oil and Gas University (Iraq). In the interview, he spoke about his career path in the energy sector.

Nice to see you again, Hashim! Can you tell us about your time studying in Russia?
I completed my masterʼs and postgraduate studies at SPbPU — it was the best period of my studies. The years I spent in Politech gave me not just knowledge, but shaped my engineering mindset.

What was the topic of your masterʼs thesis? Is it related to your current work?
My masterʼs thesis was devoted to optimization of oil terminals — the processes of receiving, storing and shipping fuel oil. I researched how to make these operations more efficient, safe and environmentally friendly on the example of Krasnodar region, carried out engineering calculations to determine the optimal parameters of equipment operation, proposed solutions for process automation.

Now I teach at the Basra Oil and Gas University and also manage the Central Research and Development Department. I actively use the knowledge and approaches gained at Politech.

Why did you decide to continue your postgraduate studies at SPbPU? What key skills did you acquire here?
As a student of the international masterʼs program, I was convinced in the exceptional level of instructors — they are true professionals.  The learning atmosphere is both demanding and supportive, which is ideal for scientific work.

Organizational aspects are also important for an international postgraduate student — paperwork, obtaining a student visa. In Politech, this is organized at the highest level, and I was able to fully concentrate on my research.

How did you prepare for the defense of your PhD thesis? What challenges did you face?

Everything went more than well: the higher school and supervisor helped me to highlight key problems, besides, the university has several laboratories related to my topic.

Which research areas inspire you most?

Heat transfer and thermodynamics in steam and gas turbines.

How did you become a lecturer at Basra University of Oil and Gas? What appealed to you about this job?

I started with a short-term contract. When the administration saw my approach to the job — how I explain complex concepts, connect theory to practice, and engage students in the process — I was offered a permanent position.

Now I teach two courses — Thermodynamics and Heat Transfer. At Politech I learned not just to memorize formulas, but to understand the core of thermal processes and I teach this to my students. I use the project approach — students receive real cases and tasks for independent study with obligatory defense of reports. I always back up theory with practice: I explain complex concepts using specific examples from the industry, use modern video materials and 3D visualization of technological processes.

What advice would you give to current undergraduates and graduate students of SPbPU?
Study hard, do keep going and read as many scientific articles as possible.

This April, Hashim Alzwaini returned to his alma mater and shared his experience and knowledge with current students. In the near future, he plans to return to Politech as a doctoral student to continue his scientific research in the field of energy.
