Company visit to Leningrad Metallurgic Plant

April 08, students of the Institute of Energy had an excursion to Leningrad Metallurgical Plant as part of the "Week without Turnstiles" organized by JSC Power Machines

After a mandatory safety briefing and a short overview of the enterprise's activities, students visited the 28th Rotor Workshop and 201st Steam Turbine Workshop.
In the 28th Rotor Workshop, students saw the rotor assembly and blading area where work is in progress on the rotor of a 1000 MW steam turbine for the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant. In addition to large Georg and Schiess machines, turbine blades, the cost of which reaches the price of several dozens of cars, they were able to see the operation of joint boring of coaxial holes.
The excursion dispelled the myth about the so-called "rotor graveyard" - rust-covered blanks stored outside in natural conditions. Corrosion in this type of storage, which sometimes reaches several decades, was taken into account when assigning allowances and is removed during machining during production.
The 201st Steam Turbine Shop manufactures products ranging from 60 to 1200 MW. Students went up to the assembly and testing shop of steam turbines, where a turbine for Kudankulam NPP is being prepared for delivery to the customer. The visitors got acquainted with the largest in Russia lathe and carousel machine. It was manufactured in 1939 by "Schiess" company, in 2007 it was modernized by "Kirov-Stankomash" company and still impresses with the diameter of the faceplate of 19 meters and load capacity of 350 tons. They were also able to see a modernized radial-axial impeller of a 500 MW hydraulic turbine, 8 m in diameter and weighing 250 tons, ready for shipment to Krasnoyarskaya HPP.
At the end of the tour the students were overwhelmed with impressions and suggested organizing a wall where one could leave wishes for the plant. Colleagues promised to consider this idea.
