Traditionally, in the first semester of the academic year bachelor's and master's students of the Institute of Energy visited the Dispatch Center of the United Power System of the Northwest and had an interview with Sergey Shishkin, General Director of the North-West ODU.

Future power engineers visited company's museum, learnt  principles of dispatch control in the electric power industry, the functions of the System Operator, and had a  talk with  general director in a casual format. Questions covered a variety of areas: from job prospects and career growth to what the head of the organization does. Sergey Shishkin, in his turn, tested students knowledge. "Who knows what Kirchhoff's third law is?" After a little confusion one of the students answered: "The third law does not exist, there are only two," thereby increasing the chances of becoming an employee of System Operator in the future.
"St. Petersburg Polytechnic is one of the main human resources suppliers for System Operator," says Sergey Shishkin. - Many of our employees are graduates of Leningrad Polytechnic Institute. This connection has always been and remains unbroken. Many of our graduates come to work for us not immediately after graduation but after working on the ground, at a real substation, thermal or hydroelectric power plant. Knowledge of hardware is one of the key factors of success when working at System Operator and I have always encouraged and still encourage young people to start from the basics and learn the fundamentals".
Answering the questions about career opportunities the general director of North-West dispatcher office stressed out that the company has an efficient system of staff training.
The guests were told about the control system of the United Power System of the North-West in the dispatch room of the North-West Operational Dispatch Service.  Deputy Head of the Operations and Dispatch Service Egor Glukhikh and Senior Dispatcher Roman Komogortsev introduced the guests to the facilities of the power system and the principles of displaying and using the information on the dispatcher panel.
"Every minute, 24 hours a day, the dispatcher controls the load of power plants, operation of power transmission lines and power flows to adjacent power systems," said Roman Komogortsev. - The quality of the decisions made by the dispatcher, the quality of the calculations and the information prepared by the entire dispatch center affect the prevention of accidents and the quickest restoration of the normal operation of the energy system.
